Waterloo startup TabNine acquired by Israeli startup Codota

TabNine, a Waterloo-based startup that provides coders with an all-language autocomplete software, has been acquired by Israeli AI startup Codota. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“TabNine has been embraced by users beyond what I had ever expected.”
– Jacob Jackson, TabNine

Launched in late 2018, TabNine was founded by 22-year-old University of Waterloo graduate Jacob Jackson. Its code prediction tool supports over 23 programming languages across five code editors, including Sublime Text, VS Code, IntelliJ Platform, Vim, and Atom.

In July, Jackson launched TabNine’s platform Deep TabNine, which uses deep learning to provide code completion suggestions. One month later, TabNine launched TabNine Local, which lets coders run Deep TabNine on their own computers. Jackson currently works as a research scientist at OpenAI.

Codota’s acquisition of TabNine will create a comprehensive AI-based software development platform that fully supports nearly every popular programming language including Java, Python, C, and HTML.

TabNine’s platform will continue to operate independently, but the startups’ technology will be used to power both TabNine and Codata’s platforms, with the goal of providing prediction precision and completion, and increase development, speed, and efficiency.

“TabNine has been embraced by users beyond what I had ever expected,” said Jackson. “Codota is the right partner to move TabNine forward because I trust the team and because our technology is complementary.”

Codota’s AI-assisted software development platform helps programmers code faster with fewer errors and offers code prediction for Javascript on WebStorm and IntelliJ IDEs, in beta. The platform analyzes code archives to generate insights to increase developer productivity. According to Codota, its platform serves thousands of developers every month and the company expects to increase its users with the acquisition of TabNine.

“The TabNine approach has proven highly effective and the optimum lies in combining the two and this will be our challenge moving forward,” said Codota CTO and co-founder Eran Yahav. “[The acquisition] has already produced fantastic results that could not have been obtained by either approach on its own.”
