Shopify acquires Swedish ecommerce marketplace Tictail

Shopify has acquired Swedish startup Tictail.

Tictail’s marketplace allows users to shop for clothing, home decor, and art from emerging small businesses around the world. The company was founded in Sweden, and has offices in Stockholm and New York.

The news was first reported by Swedish outlet Breakit, which confirmed the acquisition after a message sent to Tictail users. Per Breakit, all users can move their store to Shopify between now and April 1, 2019 before the Tictail platform is dissolved.

Another Breakit article points to some struggles within Tictail, which cut its workforce by at least 10 people back in 2016.

“While Shopify does not comment on individual acquisitions, we do periodically acquire companies, to bring specific talent or technology into the organization to complement and enhance our existing offerings,” a Shopify spokesperson told BetaKit after a request for comment.

Shopify’s notable acquisitions in the past include Return Magic, which allows retailers to build branded portals for returns, product design firm Boltmade, and marketing assistant Kit.
