The Canadian Innovation Exchange (CIX) has named Markham-based Real Matters as the CIX 2017 Innovator of the Year.

The CIX Innovator of the Year Award is given out every year to a Canadian firm that transforms and disrupts an industry in profound ways.

“Recognizing and celebrating Canada’s tech industry successes is hugely important.”

Real Matters, which allows independent field agents to create a marketplace for the provision of mortgage lending and insurance industry services, filed to go public on the Toronto Stock Exchange in April of this year. The company currently has offices in Buffalo, New York, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Middletown, Rhode Island.

“When we started Real Matters over a decade ago, our goal was to use technology to bring innovation and efficiencies to a segment of the mortgage lending industry where we knew there was a great opportunity for improvement,” said Jason Smith, CEO and founder of Real Matters. “I am extremely proud of the leading market positions we’ve established both here in Canada and in the US, and am honoured to be receiving this award which recognizes innovation in this country.”

CIX said that Smith will accept the award on behalf of Real Matters and share insights as a keynote speaker at the CIX conference taking place on Oct. 17 and Oct. 18 in Toronto.

“The CIX Innovator of the Year Award is a key component of CIX,” said Lauren Linton, executive director of CIX. “Recognizing and celebrating Canada’s tech industry successes is hugely important and we are proud to present this award to Real Matters.”

Past recipients of the award have included Shopify, Wattpad, and Desire2Learn.
