Polar CEO Kunal Gupta explains why he doesn’t have email (but does have Slack) on his phone

Kunal Gupta

Kunal Gupta has been an entrepreneur in the Toronto startup community for quite some time as the head of Polar (formerly Polar Mobile). But at a recent #TechTO event, Gupta wasn’t on hand to talk about the evolution of technology he has seen in that time. He was there to talk about something he finds “much more important.”

“2016 has kind of fast forwarded and caught up to us pretty quickly,” Gupta said. “A lot of us feel as though we’re being managed versus managing.”

Gupta goes on to explain that he’s not talking about corporate management issues, but those in our personal lives. His solution? Focus.

“With focus, you can achieve absolutely anything. And that goes not only for business but also for life.”

In the video below, Gupta lists the tips and tricks he’s uncovered in his attempts to building a company culture that “treasures focus, that treasures calm, that treasures happiness and joy.” One of those includes taking email off his phone, which the Polar CEO called “one of the best business decisions I’ve ever made.”

To find out why Slack makes the cut (with the rest of the four icons on his home screen), you’ll have to watch the video.
