Today in hackathons: Unearthed, Insurtech QC

In the upcoming months, Toronto and Quebec City are hosting conferences and hackathons to get tech enthusiasts excited about creating new and creative solutions in just a few days. Here’s a roundup of what’s happening.

Toronto hosts Unearthed mining hackathon with Barrick Gold

The Unearthed hackathon, taking place from March 3rd to March 5th at Bitmaker in Toronto, will give tech startups, entrepreneurs, and innovators the opportunity to develop solutions to challenges faced by mining companies.

The hackathon will feature multiple industry challenges from global mining companies like Barrick Gold. Participants will receive mentorship from leaders of mining companies and tech experts from Canada’s startup community. At the end of the hackathon, teams will present their final solutions to a panel of judges, where prize money, tech credits, and support will be awarded. The winning prototype will also be showcased at Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada.

This is the first time Unearthed is happening in Toronto, after being hosted in cities like Cape Town and San Fransisco.

“We are excited to put Toronto’s innovators to the test against global mining challenges. Developers, programmers, data scientists, engineers, and other innovators will not have a bigger opportunity to get in front of and impact the mining industry than at Unearthed,” said Mikey Kailis, the growth manager at Unearthed.

Quebec City to host first conference dedicated to Insurtech

Insurtech QC is Quebec City’s first conference and pitch competition fully dedicated to insurtech. As the insurtech sector emerges from FinTech, this conference aims to bring together startup founders, insurers, and leaders at the forefront of technological changes in the insurance sector.

At Insurtech QC, attendees will be able to consult how the industry’s key players are using new technologies to redefine product design, distribution models, and customer experiences in the traditional insurance industry. A pitch contest will also take place for the best current innovation projects in the field of insurance.

The conference, which is taking place on April 3 at Le terminal de croisière du Port de Québe, has invited local and international speakers including Adam Hare, the VP of business development and marketing at Insurance Jack; Clément Francomme, the CEO of Utocat; Alex Veilleux, the VP of Innovation at Desjardins Assurances; and Emmanuele Mury of InsPeer. The speakers will cover topics such as blockchain, P2P insurance, robo-advice, AI, and telematics.
