Startup Jobs Spotlight: Financeit is hiring

Financeit

As startups lead the way in building Canada’s innovation economy, BetaKit does its part to help fill the talent gap with our BetaKit Job Board.

To highlight some of the great roles prospective employees can fill across Canada, we put one company in the spotlight to find out what makes it tick.

Currently, Toronto-based Financeit is hiring. We talked to Petroula, HR Manager, Elan, Developer, and Amanda, Senior PR and Communications Manager, about the company.

When someone comes into work on their first day, what’s the first thing you tell them to get them excited to work at Financeit?

Petroula: Our onboarding process begins before the new employee’s first day. New hires are sent an email from our HRIS, BambooHR, with guidance on what to expect when they arrive, what time to come in, and who to ask for. We all know how intimidating the first day on the job can be, so our intent is to make new employees feel as comfortable as possible.

New employees are greeted upon arrival by our People Success team. We help get them settled at their new desk and provide them with a new hire package, which outlines their schedule for the week. They then go through a new hire orientation, where they are given a Financeit Survival Kit to get them excited about the new role and joining our team. The survival kit was first created when launching our company values this year, and we felt it was important for all new employees to receive one. The kit includes postcards with our values written on them, a mug, and Financeit socks.

In what ways do you help to foster personal and/or professional growth at Financeit?

Petroula: We are advocates of promoting from within, and giving individuals the opportunity to grow with us. The recruitment process begins by posting internally for positions that employees may be interested in, or may know other individuals who are. We have an employee referral program in place, as we trust that our employees will recommend individuals that have similar values and would be a strong cultural fit. The program awards employees with a bonus of $1000, subject to certain conditions.

Other initiatives that take place at Financeit to foster personal and professional growth include 10% time, and FIT Women. With the ten percent time initiative, the Tech team is given ten percent of their time to work on projects they wish to pursue that they believe will help benefit the company. The FIT Women initiative was developed as a way to empower our employees, and includes holding panel discussions on topics such as women in code, working parents, and health and wellness, as well as attending external events that are of interest to the group. We are also in the midst of developing a mentorship program through this initiative. At Financeit we want to promote and celebrate our diversity and culture.

Elan, what is your favourite part about working on the Tech team?

Elan: One of my favourite things about working on the Financeit Tech team is that the code I push has an immediate impact on our users. It’s a fun feeling to have a ticket launch and then right away start receiving feedback about how excited the merchants and/or internal users are to have access to the new functionality. Since our users depend on our software as part of running their businesses, they’re deeply invested in what we do, and this serves as a great motivator for me to want to provide the best possible product.

The culture within the Tech team is also one of my favourite parts about working with this group. Everyone is always happy to help each other and to collaborate on projects as needed. We have detailed code reviews, where we make sure any code written is comprehensively reviewed by a member of the team. Through this process we can help teach each other techniques we know that will make it better. We work hard and are passionate about the product, but always make it a point to have fun together.
