Startup job spotlight: business development lead at Raise Your Flag

Raise Your Flag Toronto Startup

With startups leading the way in Canadian innovation, every day, BetaKit does its part to help fill the talent gap with our BetaKit Job Board.

To highlight some of the great places prospective employees can work at across Canada, we’ll put one startup in the spotlight each week to find out what makes their company tick.

Right now, Raise Your Flag is hiring a business development lead. We talked to Raise Your Flag founder and CEO Ryan Porter about the best parts of working there.

If someone were to come in to work for Raise Your Flag on their first day, what’s the first thing you tell them to get them excited to work there?

We’re picking a really big fight. Not in an overly-aggressive, Braveheart “freeeeeeeeeeeeedom!” fight, but we’re challenging the way that young people approach their post-secondary decision-making and career choices and we’re really challenging the way that companies attract and recruit their entry-level workers.

We want the people we work with to be excited by that. Excited that we have a really, really big hill to climb but the view at the top is beyond worth it — yes that’s a little cliche and mightily corny but we believe that.

What are some company perks that people can expect when working at Raise Your Flag?

Aside from starting your first day with a shiny new Macbook, flexible working hours and up to five weeks vacation, we think it’s equally as important to point out that you’ll be working in a small team where you will directly impact the direction, culture and leadership of your company.

When working as part of the bizdev team, what kind of problems could the bizdev expect to tackle? What makes the team so dynamic?

Like most small startups, our biggest obstacle is obscurity. Meaning, most of the companies you’ll approach at the beginning of your time with us will have no idea who we are and how we can help.

Being the Biz Dev Lead at Raise Your Flag means growing the customer-base and therefore, the reach and awareness, of the product. At the beginning, you’ll spend about 70 percent of your time on developing new business, 20 percent of your time testing and developing the biz dev strategy and 10 percent managing the accounts you’re bringing in.

In what ways do you help to foster personal and/or professional growth in your team?

At Raise Your Flag, we support the professional growth of the team by removing any obstacle that stands in the way of you being your best. If that means paying for professional training or attending a conference that will move the needle for you, that’s what we’ll do.

What’s your favourite part about working with the Bizdev team?

We like to say that Raise Your Flag is “small in stature but massive in mission”. The people we work with have chosen to tackle the problems we’re solving. They’re here because of a burning desire to build a great company that’s making a measurable impact to both sides that we serve.
