Spark Centre accepting applications for $125,000 Ignite Pitch Competition

For the sixth year in a row, Durham-based Spark Centre, in partnership with Ontario Power Generation (OPG), is accepting applications for its Ignite Pitch Competition, which awards entrepreneurs up to $125,000 in seed funding.

The Ignite Pitch Competition’s goal is to foster innovation and support entrepreneurs in the Durham Region. This year, the Ontario Power Generation is looking to expand its reach by supporting three specific sectors, including inspection and reactor innovation, environment, and refurbishment. Spark Centre said the winner in each category will receive $25,000 and the opportunity to work with OPG departments to develop their idea.

“Energy solutions will feature strongly in Ontario’s future and Spark Centre is thrilled to be partnering with OPG again this year.”

“Energy solutions will feature strongly in Ontario’s future and Spark Centre is thrilled to be partnering with OPG again this year as we work together to find the nation’s most disruptive energy solutions”, said Sherry Colbourne, CEO and president of Spark Centre. “We couldn’t be happier to be expanding our relationship with OPG and working together to build a strong Durham Region.”

In November 2016, Dash MD, which raised $500,000 in April 2018, and Hexyoo Scientific took home $25,000 each from the Ignite Pitch Competition.

“Innovation within OPG Nuclear is vital for our future success. Having attended last year’s competition, I know some innovative ideas are out there and this competition can help us find them,” said Glenn Jager, the president of nuclear at OPG. “Innovation is fast becoming an integral and natural part of our business, and it feels about time.”

Those interested in the Ignite Pitch Competition have until September 28 to apply.
