Senator Colin Deacon talks open banking, competition, #FreeBoswell

Senator Colin Deacon

Today, we add a new member to the #FreeBoswell movement.

“The reality is [the banks] have been used to an environment where they can increase fees without increasing value to customers.”

Joining us is friend of the pod, Senator Colin Deacon, for a wide-ranging conversation familiar to regular listeners.

We talk about the recently dropped open banking report, of which the senator is a big fan, the impact of the recent election results on its progress, and where that ever-important open banking Czar might be found (hint: Australia?).

We also talk about the woeful state of competition in Canada, its impact on innovation (and consumers), and indoctrinate the senator into the #FreeBoswell movement.

One note: on this podcast we mention a bunch of different companies, from Canadian telecoms, to FinTech startups like Wealthsimple and Borrowell, as well as incumbent FIs. We wanted to note that over the decades, either Rob or TWG has consulted with some of these companies, because Rob is 1,000 years old.

Let’s dig in.
