Kik answers questions about potential sale and IPO on #TheDisruptors

The Disruptors

Another Thursday night, another episode of The Disruptors. This week’s episode was all about straight talk, as hosts Amber Kanwar and Bruce Croxon went back and forth over the Apple Watch, and Amazon’s latest financial numbers.

But the meat of the show was dominated by Kitchener-Waterloo startups, featuring Medella Health’s pitch to manage diabetes, and local tech darlings Kik.

Sitting down with Amber, Kik’s co-founder and CTO, Chris Best, spoke to the company’s early days stumbling into the power of messaging apps and the growing pains that came from their appeal. Best was also direct in his response to Amber’s questions about potential acquisitions. “We’re 100% focused on building an independent, sustainable Kik,” he said. “We want to take over the world.”

Amber also asked Best if that meant an IPO – all the rage for Canadian startups these days – was in Kik’s future. His response? “Probably, possibly. At some point, yes.”
