CanCon Podcast Ep. 91: Do we not give the Canadian gaming industry enough tech credit?

Mass Effect Andromeda

There’s an ongoing fight for control between our tech and political bodies.

While the AI community is currently grasping with the concept of inherent bias, and Facebook is arguing that it can’t really direct its algorithms to seek and destroy fake news (even if it can turn off the reach of all news publications in a hot minute), the Frightful Five global tech companies — Apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon – is also recommending that governments remain cautious when attempting to regulate issues they may (or may not) be trying to solve. Bloomberg’s Gerrit De Vynck, who has been tracking the back-and-forth, joins the pod to discuss.

Is Apple held to a double-standard? Rumours abound about the reported concessions the company is making to get the iPhone X out in time to enough people to maintain its perception of leading tech innovation. The launch itself is a concession because it can’t produce enough of the device to satisfy the billions of people that crave the allure of Apple’s ‘it just works’ magic. Is Apple caught in the innovator’s dilemma or are we simply giving the company too hard a time?

Did you know that the Canadian video game industry is driving tech innovation? Did you know there was a Canadian video game industry? Patrick O’Rourke, Mayor of New Donk City, sheds light on an overlooked aspect of our tech sector (and $3 billion of our GDP).

Tune in as CanCon’s podcast crew – Patrick O’Rourke, MobileSyrup Senior Editor; Gerrit De Vynck, Bloomberg Tech Politics Reporter; and Douglas Soltys, BetaKit Editor-in-Chief – ask if the current tech giants are too big to fail, or be regulated.
