Does Twitter understand what its problem is? That’s the question the team is asking this week on the latest CanCon podcast.
In one of its earliest podcasts last year, the CanCon crew dedicated a podcast to fixing Twitter.
Now, Twitter has implemented 280 character tweets, doubling what was a 140 character standard on the platform. The hope with the increased length is to stop haemorrhaging users — however, the CanCon team wonders why Twitter didn’t address its more pressing issues first.
When it comes to giving the people what they want, Netflix definitely knows what it’s doing. This week, the media giant announced that it will be earmarking $500 million for Canadian content in the next five years. Although the specifics of the deal haven’t been released, Canadian Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly is pointing to the decision as a critical part of her “Creative Canada” plan. Will this mean more Canadian-centric content? Or just more content produced here and focused on American entertainment values?
Among other companies vying for Canada’s attention this week is Alibaba. Jack Ma, founder and executive chairman of Alibaba, gave a talk in Toronto at the #Gateway17 conference alongside Justin Trudeau. He made a case for why China is the best opportunity for Canadian entrepreneurs to take their businesses global.
Tune in as CanCon’s podcast crew – Erin Bury, Managing Director of Eighty-Eight; Rob Kenedi, TWG’s General Manager in New York and host of the amazing #smallrooms podcast; Patrick O’Rourke, MobileSyrup Senior Editor; and Douglas Soltys, BetaKit Editor-in-Chief – ponders Canada’s future business moves and the secrets of landing 280 characters.
