Returning for its third year, Elevate is now simply too big for one event guide. So BetaKit has produced a guide to every event and stage taking place across the seven-day festival. You can find a link to each individual guide on our Guide to Elevate 2019 hub page.
Technology has the potential to change the world for the better. It won’t happen without young people embracing that potential.
“In schools, we are being prepared for mediocrity – or actually, even less than that.”
– Riya Karumanchi
Taking place at Design Exchange—a not-for-profit, charitable organization that delivers design-based education to young people—Elevate Youth will feature emerging and established creators developing innovative solutions to world problems. Key to their success is ensuring they have access to the space, mentorship, and tools make it happen; the day’s program asks high school teachers, post-secondary instructors, and leaders of youth-focused not-for-profits to register to attend.
Take two young leaders from The Knowledge Society—Isabella Grandic and Riya Karumanchi—who are using machine learning and other emerging technologies to build products like lab-grown meat and a smart cane.
“I grew up thinking that success was based on how much money you made, your status, and the kind of job you had. I thought this was the same for everybody,” wrote Karumanchi in a recent article on her role model, Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg. “I wasn’t being prepared for how the world was going to be like in the future.”
Throughout the day, young people will be pushed to explore their passions, develop new skills, and think about how they can improve their communities. At Elevate Youth, creators like Director X will talk about Operation: Prefrontal Cortex, a charitable effort to raise $25,000 to bring mindfulness programs to schools, with the goal of reducing violence in Toronto. The program will train teachers in stress management techniques that they can integrate in their teaching.
“We can be a resource for all the people that want to see change,” says Director X.
