ResolvMD, an Alberta startup streamlining medical billing for doctors, has expanded its services into Ontario.
ResolvMD uses AI-integrated software to automate, manage, and optimize billing claims for Canadian doctors. Founded in 2019 by Calgary-based physicians Dr. Marshall Ross and Dr. Ryan Allen, as well as former investment banker Patrick Onyekweli, the startup uses a proprietary “physician insight portal” to check medical claims for errors or missing billing codes, and then submit those claims to provincial health authorities. Combining both AI-driven tools and human billing specialists, the “full service” platform also assists with claim preparation, rejections, and collects and provides data to medical practices on their billing trends.
“Over the course of an entire career … missed codes add up to a significant amount of income that physicians earned but never collected.”

Under Canada’s universal healthcare system, doctors and medical clinics bill provincial and territorial health authorities for the services they provide using a complex system of billing codes that are used to represent everything from a routine assessment to the time of day a patient was seen.
Lauren Hauswirth, the head of growth for ResolvMD, said codes and billing systems differ across jurisdictions, but that a single patient visit can often include several different billing codes.
“A single visit can have five or more codes, and each represents a monetary value,” Hauswirth said, adding that the breadth and complexity of coding guidelines and processing systems can often result in physicians leaving money they’re entitled to on the table.
“Over the course of an entire career, those missed codes add up to a significant amount of income that physicians earned but never collected,” Hauswirth added.
Moving east
Since its founding, ResolvMD has grown its client base to around 1,700 of Alberta’s roughly 14,000 registered physicians, leveraging financing from firms like PaceZero Capital Partners for product development across the province. Now, the startup has moved into Ontario, Canada’s largest medical billing market.
ResolvMD soft-launched in Ontario this past August, with an official launch taking place in early October at Ontario’s Digital Health Conference. Since then, Hauswirth said the company has added around 150 more clients onto the ResolvMD platform, which takes 1.95 percent of all of the paid claims it processes.
“It’s been growing quickly,” Hauswirth said. “We’re getting in front of a lot of physicians through our national partners.”
Ontario is home to more than 31,000 practicing physicians, according to the Ontario Medical Association.
New markets, new systems
Setting up shop in Ontario meant transitioning ResolvMD’s tech from AHS’s billing system to OHIP’s. To do that, the startup built a new operating system, which it says passed Ontario’s conformance testing—a mandatory technical review process required by provincial health authorities—earlier this year. It also hired a team of Ontario-based billing experts, which help review and address claims processed through the platform.
While ResolvMD is focusing on building its brand recognition in Ontario, where it faces competition from a handful of already established billing companies, the company told BetaKit in an interview that its experience building for Ontario could lend itself to expansions elsewhere, too.
“British Columbia is definitely the next place there could be an opportunity,” Hauswirth said. “That’s what we’re evaluating right now.”
Hauswirth added that ResolvMD is also considering international expansion opportunities alongside the potential for further Canadian expansion.
If there were to be a second Canadian expansion into British Columbia, Hauswirth said it would likely occur in 2027.
