Black Swan #16: Minister Bains explains the feds’ COVID-19 response

BetaKit podcast

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the federal government has had a direct hand in supplying support to sustain the Canadian innovation sector.

“We want to be bold, we want to think big, but we want to be flexible and nimble as well.”
-Navdeep Bains

How has that gone so far? What’s worked, what hasn’t, and what comes next?

This past Tuesday, July 21, we had the opportunity to speak directly with Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. It was a candid and wide-ranging discussion that we hope will answer some of the above questions.

The interview has certainly shed some light on potential future plans for support from the federal government. As the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) makes its way through the House of Commons, featuring both an extension an extensive revisions, Minister Bains noted to BetaKit that a similar extension to the IRAP IAP (essentially a CEWS for pre-revenue tech companies) “makes a lot of sense.”

To aid in understanding the innovation acronym bingo often played by our current government, co-host Rob Kenedi and I also provide a brief overview of each program mention on the podcast so listeners don’t get lost in the sauce.
