Volta accepts five new companies into Residency program

Halifax-based Volta, which supports startups with programming and workspace, has announced five new residents.

With this announcement, Volta now has 43 companies working out of the innovation hub’s space. Volta’s Residency program offers accepted companies over $50,000 in resources, office space with free Wi-Fi, flexible lease agreements, and access to a board of mentors and seasoned entrepreneurs.

Its new residents include:

  • Binogi: an education platform that offers animated lessons and quizzes to make learning more fun for students.
  • Electric Owl: a company developing a SaaS platform called Garden Manager, which helps people grow food using AI-driven planning and coaching.
  • Resqunit: offers fishermen affordable solutions to recover lost crab and lobster gear while also keeping the oceans clean.
  • SmartMed: developing a shift-scheduling tool called SmartShift for medical and first-response workers, allowing users to auto-schedule up to 800 shift positions in one minute.
  • Quantum Link: a company that offers its flagship product vlife, an online marketplace that connects users with small independent businesses that grow communities.

“Halifax stood out as being able to offer a culturally diverse and highly educated workforce, which is paramount to create global content,” said Johan Grafstrom, Binogi’s director of production. “Having already received some applications and meeting applicants, we are more than confident that our studio here in Halifax will contribute to our global success.”

Aside from offering startups with residency, Volta also offers Volta Cohort, which offers startups $25,000 from a micro-fund, and hosts the Ecosystem Impact Awards.

“Our Residency program is at the core of what we do,” said Jesse Rodgers, CEO of Volta. “Nurturing the growth and development of founders who are building innovation-driven enterprises has been a foundational part of Volta’s purpose since day one … we now have nearly as many Residents working out of Volta as we do companies who have graduated from the program to become Alumni.”
