As startups lead the way in building Canada’s innovation economy, BetaKit does its part to help fill the talent gap with our BetaKit Job Board.
To highlight some of the great roles prospective employees can fill across Canada, we put one company in the spotlight to find out what makes it tick.
Currently, Loopio is hiring. We talked to Hailey Adams, People Operations Manager, and Matt York, co-founder and CTO, about the Toronto company.
When someone comes into work on their first day, what’s the first thing you tell them to get them excited to work at Loopio?
Loopers – that’s what we call Loopio team members – are always excited even before their first day. Throughout our interview process, we share our company goals and values, we tell stories, and we fill them in on upcoming events and more.
On their first day, we ask them to start at 11:00 a.m. This gives us time to set their desk up with new equipment and welcome gifts/surprises. When they arrive, they are welcomed by the entire Loopio team. At noon, we head out for lunch with a couple of team members to continue the celebration!
A Looper’s first week is always mapped out for them. We have a pretty extensive onboarding process that includes:
- Meetings with a member of each team to gain a full understanding of what everyone is responsible for.
- A meeting with our founders to learn about the history of Loopio, along with our Mantra and Core Behaviours
- A training session on how to give and receive feedback. ‘Uncomfortable Honesty’ isn’t just a Core Behaviour that we talk about, we actively encourage and practice it every day.
A Looper’s first week ends with yet another celebration during our weekly ‘Get Loopi’! This is when the entire company meets at the end of each Friday to celebrate the week and bond as a team.
Disclaimer: Celebrations can and will occur at any time.
What are some company perks that people can expect when working at Loopio?
Our amazing culture is the true “perk” at Loopio and the real reason Loopers say they love working here.
While we do have a Fabi foosball table, basketball nets, a beer fridge, and bean bags, these are not what we truly value at Loopio.
We value our professional development opportunities, speaking opportunities, and constant mentorship through 1:1s and regular feedback from our incredible leadership team.
We value our encouragement to learn through hackathons, quarterly book clubs, lunch and learns, product demos, and more.
Personal and professional growth is very important to everyone at Loopio.
We value employee wellness. We took the time to create a benefits plan that supports our Loopers in the best way. These benefits kick in on day one. In addition to the four weeks vacation that we encourage everyone to take in order to relax and recharge, we also offer a charity day so every Looper can have extra time to give back to the community.
We value our continuous celebrations of company, team, and individual accomplishments! One of my favourite celebrations is our annual company retreat. The entire company goes away for two nights at the start of January. We spend this time reviewing successes from the previous year and getting aligned on goals for the year to come. It is also the most incredible bonding experience!
Are there any current openings at Loopio that you want to highlight?
We currently have roles open on every team – check out our careers page at www.loopio.com/careers.
One of our priorities right now is to grow and scale our development team. We are currently focusing on Senior Software Developers and Managers.
We are looking for a master of the “cupcake delivery” approach – you know how to break down large requirements into a small shippable feature with just the right level of detail and polish (icing and sprinkles). You can build smart processes that people actually see value in. You have a “get it done” attitude, but you understand the difference between smart shortcuts and shortcuts that keep phones buzzing all night.
Intrigued? Loopio could be for you!
In what ways do you help to foster personal and/or professional growth in your team?
Personal and professional growth is very important to everyone at Loopio.
Every Looper has a manager who coaches through goal setting, frequent 1-on-1s, and real-time feedback.
In addition, we have countless professional development opportunities. In order to make sure we were offering as many opportunities as possible, we created an easy process for Loopers to request additional learning opportunities to help them learn and develop their skills.
What’s your favourite part about working with the Loopio team?
The people!
Every Looper is incredibly driven, passionate, supportive and collaborative. We have a group of really dedicated people who are always helping each other and pushing each other to be the best selves we can be. It actually creates an exciting buzz in the office that is pretty hard to describe!
We all work very hard but we know not to take ourselves too seriously. We are all a little “loopi” and we know how to have fun!
How is Loopio involved in Canada’s tech and startup community? What are some of the initiatives that you support?
We try to give back as much as we can and are always looking for new ways to support and get involved in the community.
We recently sponsored a WomenHack event. It was a very impressive evening, and we were happy to have met so many incredibly smart and driven women in the tech community!
We also support UofT You’re Next and MaRS events. Meeting with students and new graduates and supporting their growth is important to us. Our founders are going back to their stomping grounds at Queens in February to participate in Q Hacks!
We also continue to support TechTO and Customer Success Toronto through their regular meetups.
So many people have helped and supported us to get Loopio where it is today. We are committed to giving back by helping and supporting our networks and community as much as we can.
