Ottawa-based ecommerce platform Shopify today announced Ian Black, former Head of UberEATS North America, will join the company as Director of Retail.

In this role, Black will be leading the business and go-to-market strategy for Shopify Retail in Toronto, by overseeing sales, solutions, partnerships and operations, working alongside marketing and R&D leadership.

With Black’s leadership in 2019, the company plans to expand their investments in Shopify Retail.

Prior to joining Shopify, Black was head of UberEATS’ American and Canadian divisions. He was also a management consultant with Bain & Company in Toronto and New York where he advised companies and private equity funds on strategy and growth. Black attended Queen’s University and INSEAD Business School.

The Ottawa-based company opened its first Toronto office six years ago. It’s since opened an R&D centre in the city to accommodate its growing employee base. In September, Shopify committed $500 million in investment to expand its presence in Toronto.

By 2022, Shopify said it will occupy 254,000 square feet at the Well office by Front Street and Spadina Avenue, with an opportunity to expand. With Black’s leadership in 2019, the company plans to expand its investments in Shopify Retail.
