ROSS Intelligence, an IBM Watson-powered platform that helps lawyers find relevant cases with natural language search, is returning to its roots in Toronto with the opening of an R&D office.
The Centre will be called ROSS North, and is scheduled to open on June 5 with Mayor John Tory in attendance.
ROSS’ platform allows lawyers to ask questions in plain English, and reads through the entire body of law and returns an answer and topical readings from legislation, case law, and secondary sources. The goal is to help lawyers manage large bodies of information, while giving them more time to actually help their client.
“We want to work with the best and the brightest,” said Jimoh Ovbiagele, the company’s CTO. “Canada – and Toronto – is the best place to do that. We look forward to strengthening our partnership with U of T.”
The company, which is currently based in San Francisco, was founded by University of Toronto students in 2014. The company boasts clients like Baker & Hostetler, a firm with over 940 lawyers across the US; Dentons, and Simon Thatcher.
Recently, many US-based companies have been setting up in Canada attracted by robust AI talent. Uber recently launched its own research hub.
