Raise Your Flag wants to help you reach your dream career without formal education

Raise Your Flag

Postsecondary education is often top of mind when considering what to after high school, but one Toronto-based company wants to change the way that we think about traditional education.

Pitching on The Disruptors, Raise Your Flag‘s platform allows its users to learn about interesting careers — from photography to being a boat captain — without having to go to a postsecondary institution. It provides step-by-step guides to pursuing a chosen career path and shows what skills are required along the way.

“Up until this point, everybody has said that you need a degree to get to work. But nobody is talking about the 45 percent of young people who are going from high school to work as their primary postsecondary destination,” Porter said.

Co-host Bruce Croxon said this kind of service was overdue. “We’ve got so many university grads coming out and looking for work that isn’t necessarily there. They’ve been sold a dream and meanwhile there’s a company there that’s going right for it.”

Providing a perspective from the younger generation, co-host Amber Kanwar said that people in her circles actually need more education rather than less to make in the current job market. “I needed to go beyond my BA and get these extra levels of skills because competition was really fierce.”
