With smartphones, almost anything — lunch, taxis, or groceries — can be ordered through an app. One company is adding prescription medication to that list.
PopRX is the latest company pitching on The Disruptors, and promises users that they’ll never have to travel to travel for prescription refills again. Calling itself a “personal pharmacy concierge service”, the PopRX app allows users to organize and manage prescriptions from their smartphone. The company also promises free same-day delivery of prescriptions within the GTA and a personal pharmacist that communicates with users through the app.
“We’re taking big box pharmacies on directly. They’ve got a high overhead because of their big stores, and we’re making that entire experience a virtual one so our overhead is significantly lower,” said Ali Esmail, co-founder of PopRX. “We believe that in the next five years the majority of Canadians in North America will be interacting with pharmacists and getting medication through the platform.”
The company has already received $100,000 from Shopify COO Harley Finkelstein and OMX founder and CEO Nicole Verkindt.
Co-host Amber Kanwar said that this app was just a small part of the inevitable shift towards being able to order things easily through apps. “Why shouldn’t I be able to get my prescription medication through my phone, especially when you’re on one that just need to be renewed every few months,” she said. “It’s exactly where the technology is going.”
