ModiFace launches first app after L’Oreal acquisition

Beauty AR company ModiFace has launched a Virtual Nail Salon app for iPhone, enabling photo-realistic augmented reality simulation of nail polish shades and textures on live videos of hands.

The release if the first after Modiface was acquired by L’Oreal in March 2018. Before the acquisition, ModiFace worked on several products in the AR for beauty space, including the creation of a skin health evaluation tool and virtual platforms that help users see how makeup looks on them.

This app will be a first demonstration of the company’s new hand and nail tracking technology, which is based on a deep learning model applied to over 10,000 annotated hand images and developed using Apple’s Core ML.

“The primary focal points are to innovate on beauty augmented reality and artificial intelligence, deploy these technologies at scale across L’Oreal brand websites and applications, and to provide these technologies to select retail and technology partners,” said Parham Aarabi, CEO of ModiFace.

Asked whether ModiFace would focus more on L’Oreal branded products or agnostic products moving forward, he said “The primary focal points are to innovate on beauty augmented reality and artificial intelligence, deploy these technologies at scale across L’Oreal brand websites and applications, and to provide these technologies to select retail and technology partners.”

The app will be primarily targeted to users looking for their next colour rather than nail salons themselves.
