MaRS launches LegalX, a legal technology cluster

Today marks the official launch of MaRS’ latest industry cluster, LegalX, which will focus on helping companies disrupt the legal technology sector. The creation of LegalX is in response to the growing needs of a traditional industry.

The creation of LegalX was spearheaded by Aron Solomon, the innovation lead at LegalX and a globally-recognized expert on education and legal verticals, and Jason Moyse, the manager of legal business solutions at Elevate Services. Through Elevate Services, Moyse helps law firms and corporate legal departments improve their efficiency through services like consulting and technology.

“Today’s legal technology market is expanding quickly,” said Salim Teja, EVP MaRS Venture Services. “With the launch of LegalX, MaRS is creating a hub for the key players innovating the legal sector globally.”

The cluster’s ventures include enterprises looking to disrupt the legal market through new legal platforms and processes, artificial intelligence tools, and transactional apps. LegalX follows the creation of other clusters at MaRS in the past year, including a FinTech cluster and a Retail and Digital commerce sector.

To celebrate the launch, MaRS is hosting an event that will feature the debut of Law Scout, a MaRS-based legal tech startup that connects small businesses with legal services, and a demo of Beagle, a contract analysis company currently participating in the Microsoft Ventures Accelerator program in Seattle. There will also be a panel with international industry leaders for a panel discussion on legal disruption and the future of law.

The panelists include Monica Bay, a Fellow at CodeX: The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics; Sanjay S. Kamlani, executive director of Matterhorn Transactions; Mitch Kowalski, author of Avoiding Extinction: Reimagining Legal Services for the 21st Century, Dan Lear, director of industry relations at Avvo Inc.; Cian O’Sullivan, founder of Beagle; and Noah Waisberg, CEO and co-founder of Kira Inc.
