Moncton-based startup CareerBeacon has acquired Toronto company Ruutly, which provides an employer branding platform.
Ruutly joins CareerBeacon after the latter was acquired by Alongside. Founded in 2014 under the name Qimple, Alongside later changed its name in 2016. The company has made a similar change this year.
“Ruutly was built to give employers a scalable way to visually tell their employer brand story in their job postings. This acquisition … gives Ruutly the ability to do that on a new level.”
– Ryan Porter, Ruutly founder
Alongside CEO Yves Bourdeau told BetaKit that after Alongside acquired CareerBeacon from Irving family-owned Brunswick News last December, the startup decided to move forward under the CareerBeacon name for its brand recognition in the market.
“Alongside is being phased out and we are going to be CareerBeacon moving forward,” he said. Bourdeau added that Alongside acquired CareerBeacon for $6.7 million CAD, which was previously undisclosed.
Alongside raised $8 million CAD in Series A financing in December 2021, a portion of which was used to finance Alongside’s acquisition of CareerBeacon.
Now as CareerBeacon, the startup said that its acquisition of Ruutly’s technology and founder and CEO Ryan Porter is an investment in making better connections with job seekers.
Founded in 2016, Ruutly automatically transforms static text job postings into interactive candidate experiences whenever a new job is added to a company’s applicant tracking system (ATS).
Ruutly said that at any given time, it is powering over 13,000 job postings and is active in more than 35 countries. Though Ruutly has a small team of two, its clients include the likes of Indigo, Haleon, GSK, Siemens, and Coachhub.

“Ruutly was built to give employers a scalable way to visually tell their employer brand story in their job postings,” said Porter. “This acquisition by CareerBeacon gives Ruutly the ability to do that on a new level.”
Yves Boudreau, now CEO of CareerBeacon, said that Porter will lead CareerBeacon’s development team as head of product. He also told BetaKit that the acquisition, which closed in August, was a key fit for CareerBeacon’s nearly 2000 customers.
Led by Boudreau and Benoit Bourque (CTO), CareerBeacon offers a recruitment and talent acquisition platform and an ATS system tailored to small and medium sized businesses. Its platform provides detailed insights, candidate communication tools, and job posting distribution.
Prior to its acquisition, CareerBeacon’s relationship with Alongside dates back to 2014, when employers using the Alongside platform first became able to post their jobs directly to CareerBeacon. In 2017, Alongside partnered with CareerBeacon to revamp its brand and manage its recruitment and talent management website.
