âUnicorns are bleeding and Winter is Coming.”
Thatâs what one person told me after a busy week in Canadian tech. It was a week of layoffs, and Canadian companies selling to American companies or being sold for parts. It was also a week where Canadian companies also acquired American companies, and two major players – John Ruffolo and Tony Lacavera – committed to investing significant funds in Canadian companies to help keep them in Canada and compete globally.
On the CanCon podcast this week, our crack team – Erin Bury, Managing Director of 88 Creative (and former BetaKit Managing Editor), Patrick OâRourke, MobileSyrup Senior Editor, and Rob Kenedi, TWGâs Entrepreneur in Residence and host of the amazing #smallrooms podcast – discuss the competing narratives and attempt to put Canadaâs efforts in perspective contra the American tech giants: Apple, Facebook, and Twitter.
