BetaKit partners with Good Future

BetaKit x Good Future
Strategic partnership will fuel the growth of Canada's leading startup and technology publication.

Today, BetaKit announces a new strategic partnership with Good Future to fuel the growth of Canada’s leading startup and technology publication.

Through this partnership, Good Future will support the advancement of BetaKit’s business and inject capital as the new majority shareholder. The family office of Canadian entrepreneurs Arati Sharma and Satish Kanwar, Good Future’s work includes a micro venture fund, a philanthropic foundation, and majority-owned businesses.

Good Future’s investment will accelerate the growth of BetaKit’s editorial and business teams from coast to coast. New hires are already on the way.

BetaKit’s media platform serves millions of annual readers today through its journalism, which extends beyond the website to include newsletters, podcasts, videos, events, and more. Good Future’s investment will accelerate the growth of BetaKit’s editorial and business teams from coast to coast, leading to enhanced editorial offerings, subscriber benefits, and community initiatives to better serve the Canadian tech ecosystem. New hires are already on the way, including BetaKit’s first newsletter editor, with more to be added in the coming months.

“There has never been a more important time to increase access to information and quality journalism in one of Canada’s most promising sectors—one that has given both of us so much opportunity over the past 15 years,” said Arati Sharma and Satish Kanwar, co-founders at Good Future. “This commitment to BetaKit is another step in furthering Good Future’s mission to support founders with new ideas and the perseverance to see them through.”

BetaKit’s editorial division will continue to operate under the leadership of editor-in-chief Douglas Soltys, who has managed BetaKit since November 2014 (Soltys spun out the publication as an independent company in 2016). Effective immediately, Kanwar will take the position of interim CEO and join Soltys on BetaKit’s board of directors as chair, with Sharma joining BetaKit’s group of business advisors to support the future brand direction.

From the beginning, Good Future has committed to a clear divide between BetaKit’s editorial and business interests, and this partnership will not impact the publication’s editorial independence. As part of this commitment, a new Editorial Advisory Board will be established to maintain and enhance BetaKit’s editorial integrity. Continuing BetaKit’s longstanding policy, this partnership in no way guarantees Good Future or its portfolio investments coverage in the publication, favourable or otherwise. “For more than a decade, BetaKit has been the publication of record for Canadian tech, reporting on the ecosystem from within the ecosystem. I am so proud of the incredible work done daily by the BetaKit team and how it carries on the legacy of past leaders Sarah Prevette and Ian Hardy,” Soltys said. “In Good Future, I have found a mission-aligned partner that believes in the value strong journalism provides a community. BetaKit’s continued mission is ensured for decades to come.”

BetaKit is built for the people tracking, financing, and building the next generation of Canadian business. Its mission is to connect, interrogate, and inform Canadian tech. To fulfill that mission, BetaKit needs your support.
