Kyle Reid impressed a panel of four judges (including our Joseph Czikk) enough to win himself a trip to the Startup Smackdown finals yesterday at GROW Conference in Whistler.
Ultimately the Toronto-based founder and his app Pro Angler lost in the final to U Grok It, which uses RFID to bring the power of efficient, affordable inventory and asset management to the iOS and Android devices.
We caught up with Reid after his one-minute pitch and asked him about how he was able to lift his app to its current #48 position in the US App Store for Top Paid Apps. That’a a pretty amazing feat for the small Canadian startup working out of Ryerson’s Digital Media Zone (DMZ). Since it primarily focuses on spots in Florida and Texas, the app isn’t as popular in Canada.
In the interview with our Joseph Czikk, Reid told us that the fishing industry is a “technologically underserved market” worth $92 billion. His app costs $7.99 to download, plus a $2.99 subscription cost, and over 700,000 users have downloaded it.
