AI-native Canadian startups are outperforming the global average for annual revenue growth, according to a report from American cloud computing giant Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The study found that Canadian firms are expanding their sales by an average of 165 percent year-over-year, eclipsing the 156-percent mark reported globally among this group and the 65-percent rate for startups overall.

In an interview with BetaKit, AWS Canada head of digital transformation and AI Patricia Nielsen attributed Canada’s performance to its deep domain expertise in areas like financial services and healthcare, as well as “decades of investment in AI research and talent.”

“The report really points to a new kind of startup growth model, and Canadian founders are at the leading edge of it.”

“I think that’s produced a generation of founders who really understand science and the application,” Nielsen said. When you combine that with “a startup culture in Canada that’s honestly always had to do more with less, you get exactly the profile that the report describes: small teams, high efficiency, and AI built into their product from day one,” she added.

The report defines AI-native startups as companies younger than five years old that are building products with AI at their core, such as their own models or agentic systems.

On AWS’ behalf, Strand Partners surveyed more than 3,400 startup founders and senior leaders from across 20 countries, including non-AWS customers.

Companies in this cohort are often concentrated in traditional and highly regulated sectors like financial services, healthcare, drug discovery, and cybersecurity, the report found.

Globally, this group is growing much faster than the previous generation of tech companies, achieving billion-dollar valuations in 3.5 years—half the time and with half the staff it took before generative AI emerged. Fifty-five percent of them are generating more than $400,000 in revenue per employee.

“The report really points to a new kind of startup growth model, and Canadian founders are at the leading edge of it,” Nielsen said.
