Code for Canada, in partnership with the Government of Ontario, has opened applications for its first-ever fellowship program.

Launched in April, Code for Canada is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping governments build more efficient, digital public services. The organization is a part of a larger global initiative, known as the “Code for” movement, which aims to bridge gaps between government and tech communities.

“People in Ontario deserve government services that are simpler, faster and easier to use.”

For the fellowship, Code for Canada is recruiting three individuals with skills in software development, user experience design, and product management to work alongside staff in Ontario’s provincial government. The selected fellows will help the government develop innovative public service products over the course of 10 months beginning in October 2017.

“At Code for Canada, we know there are a lot of designers, developers and product managers who would love to have the chance to use their skills to create a meaningful impact and our fellowship program empowers them to do just that,” said Gabe Sawhney, Code for Canada’s executive director. “We’re thrilled that the Government of Ontario will be hosting the very first team of Code for Canada fellows, and we’re looking forward to helping the province build on its track record of digital success.”

Code for Canada said the inaugural fellowship team will specifically work with staff within Ontario’s ministry of advanced education and skills development, helping them work in more user-centred and data-driven ways to address the needs of Ontario residents pursuing post-secondary education, professional development, and job training.

“People in Ontario deserve government services that are simpler, faster and easier to use,” said Deb Matthews, Ontario’s minister of advanced education and skills development. “Code for Canada creates a valuable opportunity to connect government, technology sector and community innovators to deliver the best user experience for people.”

Interested applicants have until June 20 to apply.
