Toronto-based Hypercare has been selected as the lone Canadian startup for the 2023 AWS Global Healthcare Accelerator cohort.

The Amazon Web Services (AWS) accelerator was initially launched in November 2022 with the goal of “driving new digital solutions for the global healthcare workforce,” specifically by providing startups with more than 50 hours of custom content sessions, healthcare, business and mentoring. Amazon’s 2023 accelerator will be working with 22 other healthcare companies from around the world.

“It’s been a fantastic journey to get into the AWS Healthcare Accelerator program,” said Albert Tai, Hypercare CEO. “Even before it started, they connected us with mentors for technical and healthcare support as we developed our submission.”

Hypercare’s platform aims to streamline coordination between multiple providers across different departments and specialties. Healthcare professionals can download the app which creates schedules in real-time and lets providers communicate through its HIPAA-compliant chat feature.

The accelerator is bringing together healthcare professionals at a crucial time for Canada, as the country faces an “unprecedented shortage” of healthcare professionals due to employee burnout and workers altogether leaving the field. Results from the 2022 Survey on Health Care Workers’ Experiences During the Pandemic (SHCWEP) also showed that 95 percent of Canadian healthcare workers reported that their job was impacted by the pandemic, with 86.5 percent having felt more stressed at work during the pandemic.

Hypercare was founded in 2016 by Tai, who received his Master’s of Information System and Design from the University of Toronto. The startup has received multiple funding rounds of undisclosed amounts since 2016, according to CrunchBase.

AWS’ four-week accelerator allows startups to determine their own goals and focus, with the aim of scaling all of its participants. Prior graduates of the program include Zócalo Health and Clinify Health, both members of the 2022 cohort.
