MoPals announced this morning that Greivis Vásquez, versatile sixth-man for the Toronto Raptors, would be joining the startup’s board of directors. Vásquez will also be investing in MoPals for an undisclosed amount.
Based in Toronto, MoPals is social media loyalty program. With MoPals, Social-savvy users can post reviews and share photos of business to earn virtual currency, which can then be cashed in via MoPals’ marketplace for gift cards or other rewards. MoPals indicated via news release that the company was excited to leverage Vásquez’s social media popularity to fuel growth in both North and South America (Vásquez is a native of Venezuela).
While Vásquez’s international connections will be a benefit to MoPals, the young guard indicated that his decision was partially motivated by his newfound Canadian connection. “I am committed to Toronto and to Canada,” he said. “I want to win championships and would love to stay here for as long as possible. I think Toronto is one of the greatest cities and Canada is one of the greatest countries in the world. And this is my way of supporting my new home!”
Vásquez is also expected provide MoPals uncommon length at the guard position, an ability to finish at the rim, and a deep threat from three. He is currently averaging 8 points, 2 assists, and 2.5 rebounds in 18.5 minutes per game for the Raptors this season.
