Today in hires: Deep Genomics, Flybits, Information Venture Partners

Three Canadian organizations have brought on new team members to add to their teams, including Deep Genomics, Flybits, and Information Venture Partners. Here’s a breakdown of who is joining, and what they bring to the table.

Deep Genomics appoints Amanda Kay to chief business officer

Artificial intelligence (AI) and healthtech startup Deep Genomics has tapped Amanda Kay for the newly-created role of chief business officer.

Deep Genomics has also appointed Thomas E. Hughes to its board.

In her new role, Kay will oversee the expansion of Deep Genomics’ partnership strategy and lead corporate strategy as the startup works to advance AI Workbench, its platform designed to rapidly discover and develop genetic medicines.

Prior to joining Deep Genomics, Kay was senior vice president of corporate development at clinical-stage medical company Synlogic, where she led business development, corporate strategy, alliance management, and new product commercialization efforts. She was also chief operating officer for Pfizer’s inflammation and immunology research unit.

Deep Genomics also recently appointed Thomas E. Hughes to its board of directors. Hughes is the CEO of Navitor Pharmaceuticals, which develops novel medicines.

Flybits creates new advisory board that includes Arlene Dickinson

Toronto-based customer experience platform Flybits has created a new advisory board to guide the startup through its global expansion strategy.

Six people currently sit on the advisory board. The key mandate of the board will be to counsel Flybits as it looks to accelerate its efforts on data strategy, AI, and business growth.

This new committee includes Arlene Dickinson, general partner of District Ventures Capital, Alex ‘Sandy’ Pentland, director at MIT Connection Science, and Marshall Lux, senior partner at Patomak Global Partners.

Other board members include Sheldon Levy, co-founder of the Brookfield Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Anatol von Hahn, chairman of The Group Ventures, and Tim Karpoff, who is joining Citigroup as global head of strategy next year.

Information Venture Partners makes three hires

Toronto-based venture capital firm Information Venture Partners (IVP) has added Hasan Basrai, Sara Defina, and Peter Carrescia to its team.

Basrai joins IVP as an associate and will help the investment team to help execute new investments and provide support to our existing portfolio. Basrai was previously an operations manager for Ritual, where he was responsible for new market development in cities including New York.

Defina will serve as director of finance. She will work closely with Kerri Golden, partner and CFO, to further improve the IVP’s operations. Defina has previously held roles at SurePath Capital Partners and KPMG.

Carrescia has joined IVP as a venture partner and will work directly with the senior leadership teams of IVP’s portfolio companies on special projects. He previously served as senior vice president of strategy and corporate development at Wave Financial. He was also the president of the national accelerator, NEXT Canada.
