Square has processed one billion payments

Square, the popular mobile commerce system that was developed by Jack Dorsey, has been live in Canada since October 2012 and recently set up a permanent address in Kitchener. Square Canada currently employs about 10 software engineers, with a goal to hire upwards of 30 people. Globally, Square grown from 400 to nearly 1,000 employees in the past year.

At the official opening of its office, Square stated that sellers have facilitated hundreds of millions of dollars in commerce in Canada (20% of the nation’s small businesses are using Square). Today on Twitter, Dorsey announced a milestone for the company as it’s sellers have now made “1 BILLION payments through Square!” No indication of the total amount of dollars the 1 billion transactions represents.

Square recently received a $100 million in funding and has a valuation worth $6 billion.
