OpsLevel raises $15 million Series A funding for developer portal

Executives from eBay, PagerDuty, and Sentry invested in the round.

Toronto-based OpsLevel has secured $15 million USD in its all-equity Series A investment round led by Threshold Ventures, with participation from Vertex Ventures, S28 Capital, and Webb Investment Network.

The financing also includes commitments from executives in eBay, PagerDuty, Sentry, Signal Sciences, Sprout Social, True Layer, Replicated, Redbooth, Fauna, and Scalyr. This brings OpsLevel’s total funding to $20 million USD to date.

Co-founded by former PagerDuty engineers John Laban and Kenneth Rose in 2018, OpsLevel is building a developer portal to help engineering teams organize and manage microservices. Its catalog product simplifies the process of owning and operating services with its self-documenting system that captures valuable ownership and metadata. Users are also able to track every microservice and system.

OpsLevel’s technology has attracted a customer base that includes Chegg, Hootsuite, Zapier, Podium, Outreach, Convoy, Under Armour, and others.

As former developers at Amazon and Shopify, Laban and Rose saw how DevOps helped one of the first microservices architectures grow at Amazon, and have experienced Shopify’s transition to cloud native.

“We’ve been software architects, operational incident commanders, and have run the gamut in between. We’ve seen and experienced the difficulties that microservices architectures with distributed ownership and operations can bring to the engineering team,” according to OpsLevel.

“We founded OpsLevel to solve these problems, and make it easy for development teams to own their software in production.”

TechCrunch reported that OpsLevel plans to use its fresh funds to expand its engineering team to accelerate its product development efforts. “We’ve been seeing a lot of demand for [OpsLevel] in the market,” Laban told the outlet. A spokesperson for OpsLevel told BetaKit that it plans to spend its fresh capital by scaling every team in the company.

OpsLevel’s past funding includes a $5 million seed funding round led by Vertex Ventures. Other backers were S28 Capital, Webb Investment Network, Union Capital, and a number of angel investors that include PagerDuty’s co-founders.

A string of Canadian companies that specialize in DevOps have also recently secured financing. Gadget, an Ottawa-based company founded by former Shopify employees, raised $8.5 million in December. Toronto’s Buildable closed its first external capital last August, raising $3.76 million from the likes of BlueCat Networks founders Richard and Michael Hyatt.
