The company was the only Canadian to receive an award, with California-based SmartCatch and SAP! from Vermont taking the judge and highly-commended award respectively. Nectar provides uses AI and sensors to help beekeepers keep honeybees healthy and productive. The platform includes an app to help beekeepers monitor bee health, and predicts when potential issues will arise. The company was selected as the recipient of the People’s Choice Award by the pitch competition’s audience and Facebook Live viewers based on criteria including innovation, focus on sustainability, and market traction.

“At FoodBytes!, the people in the room deeply understand what we are building,” said Marc-Andre Roberge, co-founder and beekeeper of Nectar. “The FoodBytes! experience is all about the entrepreneur and making sure we’re in the spotlight.”

Nectar was among 20 food and agricultural startups pitching tech-based solutions to food challenges at Robobank’s Foodbytes! Montreal competition.

Foodbytes!, which announced it would be coming to Canada in December 2017, selected the 20 companies from a pool of 100 applicants consisting of both Canadian and US companies. Foodbytes! said winners of the competition will receive mentorship and connections to develop their companies, and also pitch at Rabobank’s Annual Food & Agriculture Summit in New York City on November 29.
