Introducing the Black Swan podcast by BetaKit

BetaKit podcast

Hello, it’s been a while.

The last time you heard a podcast from BetaKit was in 2019. Allow me to explain.

“Everything that happened over a four to five-month period in ’08 has happened in a four-week period this time around.”

We put a pause on the CanCon podcast for a variety of reasons: health, resources, and logistics. The plan was always to come back, bigger and better.

Relaunch the channel under the BetaKit name, retool CanCon, and add more shows with different formats. That’s what we’ve been working on.

Then a global pandemic hit.

The Canadian tech ecosystem is facing a black swan event: extremely rare and extremely severe. We knew we had to spin up something immediately:

  • To help the ecosystem stay connected in isolation,
  • To provide resources and insights that can help see them through,
  • To ensure someone was talking about Canadian tech and COVID-19 from a Canadian perspective.

This is Black Swan: a limited-run series, released twice a week, for as long as it needs to be.

For our first episode, we have Matt Roberts, partner a Canadian VC firm ScaleUP Ventures. Matt has… strong takes about the federal government’s response to COVID-19’s impact on the economy (takes that have changed significantly since Friday’s announcement of increased wage subsidies). Matt walks us through each support announcement, shares what he would do (spoiler: get SR&ED payments flowing again), and explains the advice he’s providing to portfolio companies to help them survive.
