From pivot to IPO with Canada’s pizza king, General Assembly CEO Ali Khan Lalani

GA Pizza

In the last year, a Toronto pizza place raised a $13 million Series A before filing to go public on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Today, we talk to the man behind that pizza pivot.

“‘I think General Assembly needs to get into e-commerce and food tech.’ And that was the moment that changed everything.”

Over the course of the Black Swan podcast series, we’ve spoken to a number of Canadian companies that have pivoted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. None are like General Assembly Pizza, a well-known pizza spot in the heart of Toronto’s tech district, which rapidly pivoted last year from an in-person dining experience to frozen pizza delivery subscriptions: PaaS, pizza as a service (ignore my co-host’s inferior acronym).

Joining us on this episode of the BetaKit Podcast is Ali Khan Lalani, founder and CEO of General Assembly Pizza, who explains in incredible detail the journey his company has undergone over the past year.

Following the company’s IPO later this summer, GA wants to take its PaaS across Canada and the US. Here’s how Ali plans to become Canada’s pizza king.
