Communitech, Thomson Reuters Labs, Gowling launching bootcamp for legal, tax startups

Communitech is partnering with Thomson Reuters Labs and international law firm Gowling WLG to launch a new bootcamp for startups focused on legal, regulatory, and tax industries.

‘Tipping the Scales’ will be a six-day bootcamp looking to provide Canadian legal, tax, and regulatory startups support in order to help them “position their businesses to land more customers and secure more investment.”

“An exciting opportunity to connect with, mentor, and potentially partner with the next generation of legal innovators.”

“For us, this bootcamp represents an exciting opportunity to connect with, mentor, and potentially partner with the next generation of legal innovators working to transform our industry,” said Viona Duncan, partner at Gowling WLG and co-chair of the firm’s Global Tech Group.

Communitech is currently taking applications for the first cohort of the bootcamp, which will take place in two portions this fall, the first running October 21 to 23, followed by November 18 to 20. The Kitchener-based startup hub noted that the bootcamp is meant to help strengthen current business practices around sales and marketing and will offer the opportunity to work with industry experts.

The bootcamp will consist of customer and investor pitch workshops led by Gowling WLG, Thomson Reuters, and other industry leaders in the legal, tax, and regulatory space. Participants will also have one-on-one feedback sessions from Communitech’s Growth Coaches, which look to help startups “understand what it takes” to sell to enterprises, raise series A funding, and scale.

Participating startups will have an opportunity to pitch to potential investors at a pitch event held at the end of the bootcamp. While there will be no direct prize money, the startups will present their pitches to potential customers and also present an investor pitch to potential investors, including Thomson Reuters.

“We’ve seen great success with startup bootcamps, and we’re excited to offer this for those companies in the legal, regulatory and tax sectors,” said Iain Klugman, CEO of Communitech. “We’re also proud to have the strong support of our partners like Thomson Reuters and Gowling WLG.”

Communitech also noted that through a partnership with the Canadian Digital Media Network “eligible candidates” that are chosen for the bootcamp will receive partial reimbursement from transportation and accommodations. Applications for the first cohort are open until September 8.
