The University of Ottawa has completed construction of its STEM complex.
The University of Ottawa received an investment of over $51 million through the Government of Canada’s $2 billion Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund to complete the complex, which cost a total of $115 million. The rest of the financing came via $6.4 million from the province of Ontario and $57.1 million from the university.
The goal is to provide a space that will allow students from all fields of study to collaborate on projects.
The complex includes open-concept labs, 3D-printing facilities, and an entrepreneurship hub that will provide expertise on regulatory issues, patenting, and accessing venture capital.
“This historic investment by the Government of Canada is a down payment on the government’s vision to position Canada as a global centre for innovation,” said Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Navdeep Bains. “This means making Canada a world leader in turning ideas into solutions, science into technologies, skills into jobs, and startup companies into global successes.”
The goal is to provide a space that will allow students from all fields of study to collaborate on projects.
“Fostering scientific discoveries and breakthroughs in Ottawa and throughout Canada depends on supporting our world-class scientists and researchers,” said Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Sport. “Through investments such as those under the Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund, we are continuing to lay the groundwork for making Canada a global leader in scientific excellence.”
