Code for Canada opens applications for 10-month civic tech fellowship

Code for Canada has opened applications for the second cohort of its fellowship program.

Launched in April 2017, Code for Canada is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping governments build more efficient digital services. The organization is part of a larger global initiative known as the “Code for” movement, which aims to bridge gaps between government and tech communities.

For the 2018 fellowship, Code for Canada is recruiting web developers, UX designers, and product managers who will spend 10 months working with government staff to develop digital services.

Fellows will work with either the federal government through the Public Service Commission of Canada, Transport Canada in Ottawa, or with the municipal government in Toronto. Fellows at the Public Service Commission of Canada will help develop an inclusive and user-centred solution for Canadians applying for jobs in the federal public service, while fellows at Transport Canada will conduct user research using drone pilots and prototype digital tools in accordance with new regulations.

Fellows at the City of Toronto Transportation Services will support Toronto’s Vision Zero road safety plan, which aims to reduce traffic-related injuries in Toronto by prototyping data products that engage residents and key stakeholders.

“Drones are rapidly disrupting the transportation system with new applications emerging at an accelerated pace,” said Lori Macdonald, assistant deputy minister of safety and security at Transport Canada. “We need your help. As a Code for Canada fellow at Transport Canda, you will work with drone pilots and other stakeholders to research, prototype, and test and iterate digital solutions that promote responsible drone operation, foster innovation in the civil aviation sector and contribute to the overall safety of Canadians.”

Interest applicants have until July 2 to apply.
