WeWork announced the winners of its WeWork Creator Awards for the midwest region, which included two Toronto-based entrepreneurs.
The Creator Awards is an initiative that grants $20 million to entrepreneurs, small businesses, growing companies, non-profits, and artists. WeWork announced in late April that the US-based competition was open to Toronto-area entrepreneurs due to its proximity to the midwest and central US. The awards ceremony, which took place on Thursday in Detroit, separated winners into four categories: scale, launch, and incubate.
“The Creator Awards align with our mission because as we continue to support entrepreneurs, artists, startups and nonprofits by providing them with a workspace, we also want to financially reward those who are thinking in new ways, building fresh projects and achieving real change,” Dave McLaughlin, WeWork GM for Eastern US and Canada, said at the time of the launch.
The two Toronto entrepreneurs won in the incubate category, which includes ideas and projects that need funding. One winner was Feedback App COO Josh Walters, who is building a company that is working to reduce food waste by working with restaurant vendors; and Elsie Amoako from Mommy Monitor, a mobile app for pregnant women in developing countries to monitor their health. Both won $36,000 for their ideas.
