Startup job spotlight: Software developer at Affinio

With startups leading the way in Canadian innovation, every day, BetaKit does its part to help fill the talent gap with our BetaKit Job Board.

To highlight some of the great places prospective employees can work at across Canada, we’ll put one startup in the spotlight each week to find out what makes their company tick.

Right now, Affinio is hiring a software developer. We talked to Affinio co-founder and VP of engineering Phil Renaud about the best parts of working there.

If someone were to come in to work for Affinio on their first day, what’s the first thing you tell them to get them excited to work there?

Get accustomed to working on what you love; nobody here is a cog in some machine. Affinio is built from the sum of the things we all love to work on.

What are some company perks that people can expect when working at Affinio?

Professional development opportunities, flex time, remote friendly office, a sweet setup (new Macbook Pro and everything you need to get the job done) and Friday dev beers.

When working as part of the dev team, what kind of problems could the software developer expect to tackle? What makes the team so dynamic?

We thrive in solving large-scale social data problems, from how to query against 900 million accounts and their relationships, to how to glean meaningful insights from that data, to how to present it visually so that it can be understood. Everybody on the team wears a lot of hats, and one of the best parts of the team is that everyone has the opportunity to work in any part of the process they find interesting.

In what ways do you help to foster personal and/or professional growth in your team?

We’re big on personal skills-growth. We sponsor a few local dev and data science events, but more importantly for new devs, we want to help fund anything that helps you be the best at what you do. We are happy to do anything from assigning a conference budget, so you can keep up with fast-moving tech, to setting up lunch-and-learn events so you can help spread your knowledge to others.

What’s your favourite part about working with the Affinio team?

The great sense of community that comes from building something truly new, and how everybody’s passion is reflected when they work on a team that shares their drive.
