To give people outside of the tech community an opportunity to learn how to code and develop ideas from scratch, Ladies Learning Code, in partnership with Shopify, is hosting its fourth National Learn to Code Day on Sept. 24.
This year, Learning Ladies Code, a not-for-profit that promotes beginner-friendly tech education, plans to teach attendees digital skills that they can use to create unique games. The initiative will feature over 1,500 adults who will attend simultaneous in-person coding workshops in 24 different cities across the country. The workshops will be led expert developers who will teach participants basic HTML and CSS, giving them an opportunity to learn basic programming skills and learn how to build an interactive story, quiz or game that focuses on a message, cause, or community that they care about.
“Computer programming is today’s superpower and we should all have equal access to it. We use computers more and more every day and the software that will take us into the future will be invented by individuals from a variety of backgrounds,” said Tobi Lütke, the founder and CEO of Shopify. “We are excited to be supporting National Learn to Code Day and the work Ladies Learning Code does to provide women and young people across the country with the digital skills needed to stand out in today’s workforce.”
Since its first year, Ladies Learning Code has held over 900 workshops and events to enhance women and youth’s technical skill set. Earlier this year, the group launched code:mobile where they travelled across Canada to teach 10,000 youth technical skills such as coding.
